“Folk” as a prompt could have gone a lot of different ways, but my mind immediately went towards music. American folk art takes many different forms but the song that kept coming into my mind over and over again was Brendan Benson’s “Folk Singer.” He is a local musician and I have been a fan for a long time, so I think these lyrics are just buried in my brain.
I restricted my palette to black and white, mostly sticking to using acrylic paint to add value when needed. I really wanted to add texture, but I wanted specifically to add raised music notes, so I made my own stencil with my Silhouette Portrait and a scrap piece of acetate. I’m so glad I ended up getting a Silhouette – the ability to create any stencil or die cut I want means endless possibilities.
This was a rather simple little card but I was glad to get it done. I’m running a little behind, but am looking forward to catching up on the rest of the prompts. They’re not going anywhere, I’ll get to them soon!
In the meantime I hope you are following us on Instagram – I’ve been posting lots of brush calligraphy, working through an entire alphabet of modern calligraphy. Hope to see you there!
